Tooth-Colored & Stainless Steel Options

About Dental Crowns

At Kids Dental Story, we offer both stainless steel crowns and tooth-colored (zirconia) crowns depending on your child's needs and your preferences.

Stainless steel crowns are the gold standard for primary molars — they're extremely durable and placed in a single appointment. Tooth-colored crowns are ideal for front teeth when aesthetics matter most.

Does My Child Need Dental Crowns?

  • When a cavity is too large for a filling, a crown provides full coverage protection.
  • Crowns are also used after a pulpotomy (baby nerve treatment) to restore the tooth's strength.
  • Protecting baby teeth is important — they hold space for permanent teeth and help with chewing and speech.

Age Recommendation

Any age when a tooth has extensive decay or damage. Crowns are most common in toddlers through early school-age children.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my child need a crown instead of a filling?

When a cavity is too large or the tooth is too damaged for a filling to hold, a crown provides full coverage protection. Crowns are also recommended after a baby nerve treatment (pulpotomy) to restore the tooth's structure.

Does getting a crown hurt?

No. Dr. Kim numbs the area completely before preparing the tooth. Your child will feel pressure but no pain during the procedure.

How long will the crown last?

Stainless steel crowns are very durable and are designed to last until the baby tooth falls out naturally — typically until age 10–12 for molars. Tooth-colored zirconia crowns are also long-lasting.

Are stainless steel crowns safe?

Yes. Stainless steel crowns have been used in pediatric dentistry for decades and have an excellent safety record. They are the standard of care recommended by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry for restoring primary molars.
