Dental X-Rays
Gentle Imaging for Early Detection
About Dental X-Rays
Dental X-rays are a safe and essential diagnostic tool. Digital X-rays expose children to a fraction of the radiation of traditional X-rays — less than what you'd receive from a short airplane flight.
Dr. Kim follows AAPD guidelines on X-ray frequency, taking them only when clinically indicated for your child's specific needs.
Does My Child Need Dental X-Rays?
- ✓Many cavities develop between teeth where a visual exam can't detect them.
- ✓X-rays let Dr. Kim see developing teeth beneath the gumline to monitor growth.
- ✓Early detection saves your child from more complex — and more expensive — treatment later.
Age Recommendation
Typically starting around age 3–4, or when teeth begin to touch. Frequency is based on your child's individual cavity risk.
What to Expect
- 1We use digital X-rays that emit significantly less radiation than traditional film X-rays.
- 2Your child will wear a comfortable lead apron as an extra precaution.
- 3The process is quick — most X-rays take only a few minutes.
- 4Dr. Kim will review the images with you right away and explain what she sees.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are dental X-rays safe for my child?
Yes. We use digital X-rays, which emit up to 80% less radiation than traditional film X-rays. We also provide a lead apron for added protection. The exposure is extremely low — comparable to a few minutes of background radiation in daily life.
How often does my child need dental X-rays?
It depends on your child's individual cavity risk. Children at higher risk may need X-rays every 6–12 months; those at lower risk may only need them every 1–2 years. Dr. Kim will recommend a schedule based on your child's specific needs.
Why does my child need X-rays if the dentist can already see their teeth?
A visual exam can only reveal what's visible on the tooth surface. Many cavities develop between teeth or beneath the gumline where they're invisible to the naked eye. X-rays are the only way to catch these early.
Can I request that my child not have X-rays?
Yes, you can decline X-rays. However, we recommend following AAPD guidelines, as skipping X-rays can result in undetected cavities that become more complex to treat over time. Dr. Kim will always discuss the benefit versus risk with you.
