Simple Extractions
Safe, Gentle Tooth Removal
About Simple Extractions
We always explore every option to save a tooth before recommending extraction. But when an extraction is the right choice, we make it as comfortable and gentle as possible.
Dr. Kim will explain exactly what to expect and answer all your questions before the appointment.
Does My Child Need Extractions?
- ✓Sometimes a tooth is too damaged by decay or injury to be saved with a filling or crown.
- ✓Overcrowded teeth may need to be removed to allow proper development.
- ✓Baby teeth that don't fall out on their own can block permanent teeth from coming in.
Age Recommendation
Any age when a tooth cannot be saved. Dr. Kim always explores all alternatives before recommending an extraction.
What to Expect
- 1Dr. Kim will numb the area thoroughly — your child will feel pressure but no pain.
- 2The tooth is gently loosened and removed.
- 3We'll review aftercare instructions to ensure comfortable healing.
- 4If needed, we may recommend a space maintainer to hold the gap open for the permanent tooth.
- 5Most children bounce back quickly after a simple extraction.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a tooth extraction hurt my child?
No. Dr. Kim numbs the area completely before the extraction. Your child will feel pressure and movement, but not pain. We work at your child's pace and explain each step so there are no surprises.
Will my child need a space maintainer after the extraction?
It depends on which tooth was removed and your child's age. If a baby tooth is extracted before the permanent tooth is ready to come in, Dr. Kim may recommend a space maintainer to prevent neighboring teeth from drifting. She will advise you at the appointment.
How long is recovery after a tooth extraction?
Most children recover quickly — mild soreness for 24–48 hours is normal and manageable with children's pain reliever. We'll give you full aftercare instructions at the appointment.
What can my child eat after an extraction?
Soft foods (yogurt, applesauce, soft pasta, soup) are recommended for the first day. Avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods for 24–48 hours. Your child can usually return to their normal diet the following day.
