Baby Nerve Treatment

Saving Baby Teeth with Gentle Care

About Baby Nerve Treatment

A pulpotomy is sometimes called a 'baby root canal,' but it's much less involved than an adult root canal. The goal is always to save the tooth whenever possible.

Dr. Kim will discuss all options with you and answer every question before any treatment begins.

Does My Child Need Pulpotomy?

  • When a cavity reaches the pulp (nerve) of a tooth, it can cause pain, swelling, and infection.
  • A pulpotomy removes only the infected portion of the pulp, saving the rest of the tooth.
  • Preserving baby teeth is important for chewing, speech development, and holding space for permanent teeth.

Age Recommendation

Performed on baby (primary) teeth, typically in children from toddler age through approximately age 12.

What to Expect

  1. 1Dr. Kim will numb the area completely so your child is comfortable throughout.
  2. 2The infected pulp tissue is gently removed from the crown of the tooth.
  3. 3A medicated material is placed to soothe the remaining healthy pulp.
  4. 4The tooth is then restored with a crown to protect it.
  5. 5Children typically recover quickly — most feel normal by the next day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a pulpotomy the same as a root canal?

They're similar in concept but a pulpotomy is much less involved. An adult root canal removes all pulp tissue from the entire root. A pulpotomy only removes the infected portion from the crown of the tooth, leaving the healthy root tissue intact.

Does my child need to be put to sleep for a pulpotomy?

Not typically. Local anesthesia (numbing) is usually sufficient to keep your child comfortable throughout the procedure. Dr. Kim will discuss sedation options with you if your child has significant anxiety.

How long is recovery after a pulpotomy?

Most children feel completely normal by the next day. There may be mild soreness for 24–48 hours, which can be managed with children's pain reliever. Dr. Kim will give you specific aftercare instructions.

What happens if we don't treat the infection?

An untreated infection in a baby tooth can spread to surrounding bone and tissue, affect the developing permanent tooth underneath, and cause significant pain. Early treatment is always better than waiting.
